Kirsh Foundry’s Unique Operations Key to Delivering Excellence:

Positive workplace key to employee retention, customer satisfaction

In Beaver Dam, Wisc., family-owned Kirsh Foundry began pouring grey and ductile iron castings nearly 100 years ago. Kirsh’s family-like work environment is vital to its ability to consistently deliver excellence to its customers — including Fortune 500 companies.

Attracting and retaining quality employees to deliver on those customer expectations is critical. Other local employment opportunities offer less industrial settings, but people repeatedly choose and stay with Kirsh. Over the years, Kirsh created a workplace that has led it to become an employer of choice in the area.

At Kirsh, departments celebrate birthdays and other milestones. Camaraderie is high and employees are given autonomy which further serves to build trust. And when employees trust their leadership, they deliver on expectations.

As a foundry, production cycles between times of high and low demand. In times of high demand and overtime, Kirsh leadership does all it can to balance schedules and reduce interruption to family time, though employees are appreciative of overtime pay.

Kirsh leaders also listen to employee needs. Employees know they will be heard. Forward-thinking policies have been implemented as a result. A recent example includes a newly adopted parental leave policy.

Much care is given to the physical environment of the foundry as well. Kirsh has a dust collection and air handling system to keep the air within the foundry virtually dust-free. Working with molten metal alloys creates heat, which Kirsh mitigates as much as possible using natural air flow.

Additionally, Kirsh invests in testing and modeling equipment to support quality; and Kirsh also offers complete tooling design and transfer services for its customers. These areas also provide employment for incoming applicants and upskilling for incumbents. People appreciate the range of careers available at Kirsh.

When customer products depend on human involvement, a positive workplace environment is vital to recruiting and retaining them. Kirsh strives to deliver excellence to its customers with every order and it knows its employees are the key to doing just that.
